In the past 3 years, Beijing invested RMB30 billion in environment protection. In the next two years, industrial pollution will reduce by 30%. By the end of May, the 5000 industrial polluters in Beijing reached emission standardization. From 1999 to 2004, 20-30 enterprises will be moved out of the 4th ring road annually.

Fuel cleaning devices have been installed on the 180,000 vehicles that obtained license plate after 1995. 1300 buses and 26,000 taxis are modified to clean fuel vehicles. The tail gas emission standardization rate reached 90%. The current vehicle standard in Beijing is equivalent to the European I standard. By 2004, the Beijing II standard (equivalent to the European II standard) will be incorporated.

In 2000, Beijing consumed over 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

In 2005, Beijing's natural gas usage will reach 3 billion cubic meters. The air and water quality has been improved in Beijing.
