Experts warn for the double agricultural
water usage crisis in China

( Abstract )

Experts warn that Chinese agriculture faces the double crisis of water resource shortage and water waste. The basic solution for the agriculture in the drought areas is to quicken the development of mechanized dry-land water-saving agriculture.

At present, China is greatly short of water resource and the per capita water resource is 2,300 cubic meters, 1/4 of the world average. In China, 45 million hectares of farmland, or 47% of the total cultivation area, has no irrigation. On the other hand, water waste in farmland irrigation is surprising. Due to the backward irrigation method, the effective utilization of water is only 40% and per cubic meters of water can produce 0.87 kilograms of grain.

Experts estimate that in 2030, China will use a total of 800 billion cubic meters of water and the proportion of agricultural water usage will drop from the present 72% to 52%. The development of mechanized water-saving agriculture means to increase the utilization of water resource. At present, China has established such technical system on 120 water-saving agricultural demonstration bases...
