Environmental pollution costs China RMB283 billion per year

( Abstract )

Experts estimate that environmental pollution costs China RMB283 billion per year.

Water pollution costs RMB50 billion. 80% of the 432 rivers under surveillance in China are polluted. Eutrophication has been occurred in most of the 2800 lakes. Due to the over extraction of underground water, the ground of Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai sank 1.5-2 meters. The heavy metal content of underground water in Guilin is 10-20 times over the limit.

Air pollution costs RMB20 billion. Most of it comes from the coal burning, industrial waste gas and vehicle tail gas. Acid rain covers 30% of China's territory.

Ecological destruction and natural disasters cost RMB200 billion. Forest coverage dropped from 30% to 14%. Soil erosion covers 1.55 million square kilometers, 6% of the state territory.

Solid wastes and noise pollution cost RMB13 billion.
