China refuses batteries with too much mercury

Starting from January 1st next year, battery import and export must pass "mercury content" test.

The mercury contained in batteries is very harmful to the environment. One expert conducted an experiment to show that a button-battery can pollute 600,000 liters of water, all the water for a person to drink in his lifetime. If a battery rots in the soil, the pollutant could be washed into the environment and cause damage to water, animals and crops. Though environmental friendly battery is available, much of the "non-mercury" or "low-mercury" batteries in the market are not really as what they claimed...
