Prof. Mao is a Director of Beijing Unirule Economic Research Institute. He heads the Chinese experts of the Energy Working Group in the China Council for the International Cooperation on Environment and Development, and Vice Chairman of Chinese Energy Research Society. He is also a member of LEAD-China Board of Directors and member of its core faculty. At the same time, he serves as guest professor for the Northwest University, Guangzhou University of Foreign Trade and Languages, and Shandong University of Mineral Resources. He is also a certified consultant for the Asia Development Bank. In 1992, he was awarded by the State Council as a scientist with distinguished contribution.

His research areas include micro economics, energy issues, institutional economics, environment economics, and policies issues concerning environment and development. His publications include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Optimal distribution - economics and its mathematics base,
2. Economics in our daily life,
3. Who are the obstacles for us to be better off.
4. Prospect for the Chinese morality, awarded with Antony Fisher prize.
5. Issues in modern economics(volume 1 and 2)
6. "Theoretical issues in Chinese energy policies", awarded with the 2nd price of the national best academic papers.
7. "Population distribution, migration and regional economic development in the United States", awarded by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Prof. Mao was born in Nanking, Capital of Jiangsu province in South China.
