Large population with inadequate
land resources characterizing China

( Abstract )

China's land resources are characterized by "a large total amount, low average level per person, limited amount of high quality land, and far inadequate resources."

China has a territory of 9.6 million square kilometers, 7.2% of the world total and following Russia and Canada. In contrast, the arable land in China totals almost 130 million hectares, 13% of its territory, and averages 0.1 hectare per person or 43% of the world level. China's population is concentrated in the southeast, where the arable land is far from being able to satisfy the food demands there. 666 counties in China are below the minimum the land resource level set up by FAO, of which 463 counties have the average land resource level lower than 0.03 hectare...
