International Rivers Network is seeking a Communications Coordinator


International Rivers Network is seeking a Communications Coordinator to coordinate IRN media strategies and electronic communications outreach to print, internet, television, radio, and new media outlets. The Communications Coordinator will also share responsibility for IRN's overall information collection and distribution systems.

The Communications Coordinator will report directly to the Executive Director and will work closely with the Campaigns Director, IRN campaigners, development, library, and information technology staff Communications Coordinator responsibilities will include participating in the development and implementation of IRN's media strategy; writing press releases; soliciting and placing op eds from IRN staff (and other experts in our field); cultivating contacts with journalists, editors and producers; assisting in organizing high profile press events; working directly with other organizations worldwide in their efforts to obtain coverage of local river and human rights issues in the international media. The Communications Coordinator will be responsible for maintaining IRN's media database and for overseeing the physical mailings and email distribution of advisories to the media.

The Communications Coordinator will be responsible for strategic use of IRN's print and video library, and will work with IRN staff to increase IRN's capacity to obtain, produce and distribute both print and visual materials relevant to IRN campaigns. The Communications Coordinator will also work with IRN staff to effectively fulfill information requests.

In addition to promoting the issues advanced by IRN, the Communications Coordinator will work with the IRN development team to raise the profile of the organization, particularly within the US.

The Communications Coordinator will serve as a team member on various print IRN publications and reports, and will supervise IRN web page staff.

Qualifications: A minimum of seven years working experience as a journalist or in media relations; familiarity with international environmental and human rights issues, particularly those associated with dams and other river engineering projects. Good writing skills are essential. Must be highly motivated, able to take initiative, and confident in a team atmosphere. Excellent computer and internet skills are also essential. Familiarity with the international press corps working on environment, human rights, and globalization issues is also desirable, as is overseas experience and a second language.

As this is a new position at IRN, leading candidates will exhibit a strong sense of organization and flexibility, as well as a strong desire to develop this new role.

Salary: From $40,000, depending on experience, plus benefits.
