China WTO Network is seeking a project coordinator


The China WTO Network is seeking a project coordinator who, with excellent coordination skills, can steer the establishment and development of the network.

Background

The China WTO Network is a newly established network aims to create a platform for understanding, learning and discussing China and WTO issues in relations to development and environment. Network members include national and international NGOs, researchers and academic institutes.

Upon the accession of the WTO, China’s national trade policies are to harmonize with WTO rules, which in a way posted limitations to government policies to manage trade, including those policies for rural development and poverty reduction. Therefore, it is vital to monitor the post accession impacts, the policies changes and the current WTO negotiations and make sure that these changes are pro-development.

Currently, there are limited platforms for civil society groups to discuss the issues, share information and exchange experiences. The network hopes to fill this gap. As the WTO’s sixth Ministerial Conference (MC6) is going to be held in Hong Kong in December 2005. It is a good opportunity for the network to develop and facilitate civil societies’ participation in the conference.

The coordinator will coordinate with Steering Committee members to develop and implement the planned activities, which includes:

  1. launching of the network and recruiting members;
  2. managing a website which serve as a mini-online WTO library and a discussion forum; maintaining website actively by sending out regular updates and WTO negotiation news;
  3. organizing a conference in September for cross-sectoral discussions on WTO issues; and
  4. facilitating members of the network to participate in MC6.

Success candidate should has:

  • knowledge of WTO and understanding of trade related poverty, development and environment issues
  • excellent coordination skills and able to work with people with diverse background
  • able to work independently and under pressure
  • an interest in working for vulnerable and disadvantaged groups
  • a Master Degree or a PHD in social sciences or related disciplines preferred;
  • excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese;
  • excellent computer skills and familiar with office software.
