IUCN Regional Biodiversity Programme, Asia


IUCN-The World Conservation Union, founded in 1948, brings together states, government agencies and a diverse range of non-governmental organisations in a unique world partnership: some 900 members in all, spread across 138 countries.

Its mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable.

The IUCN Asia Region extends from Pakistan in the west to Japan in the east, and north to China. 106 IUCN members are spread across 17 countries in the region.

Senior Programme Officer--IUCN Regional Biodiversity Programme, Asia

IUCN's Regional Biodiversity Programme is currently supporting the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 18 countries in the Asian region. To assist with the coordination and further development of this rapidly expanding programme, IUCN is now seeking to recruit a Senior Programme Officer. Reporting to the Head, Regional Biodiversity Programme, s/he will be responsible for developing and implementing RBP's programmes on species issues and also assist with all aspects of administration, management and development of the programme, including the supervision of field activities, the delivery of biodiversity-related technical assistance to IUCN's Members and partners, the preparation of reports to donors and of funding proposals, and the production of a quarterly newsletter.

Candidates should possess: a Master's degree or PhD in environmental sciences, biology, natural resource management or a related discipline; at least ten years of professional experience; excellent English writing abilities; proven project development and management skills; and a willingness to travel. Preference will be accorded to candidates who are nationals of Southeast Asian countries, although candidates from other parts of Asia will also be considered.

The initial contract will be for a period of one year, with long-term prospects for the right candidate. The position will be based in Colombo, with extensive travel throughout the region.
