JNCASR-COSTED Fellowship Programme


Introduction

This fellowship programme is jointly instituted by the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) and the Committee on Science and Technology in Developing Countries (COSTED) to foster free mobility and exchange of scientists from developing countries and to promote South-South co-operation. COSTED is an interdisciplinary committee of the Paris-based International Council for Science (ISCU) with a primary objective of linking science and technology for development and capacity building. This programme upholds the ICSU philosophy of encouraging the development and sharing of the benefits of science across geographic borders. The JNCASR is a centre of excellence located in Bangalore, India, and works closely with several other reputed academic institutions. Over the last four years of its operation the programme has attracted young scientists from developing countries all over the world to visit Indian centres of excellence for research training and collaborations.

Scope

The fellowship covers short-term research, training or participatory research work in physical, chemical and biological sciences in reputed scientific institutions in India including the JNCASR. The programme is open to scientists, teachers and research scholars in the developing countries in Asian, African, Arab and Latin American regions.

Duration and value of fellowship

The duration of the fellowship is upto 3 months and it is obligatory on awardees to spend this full period utilising the Fellowship to derive maximum benefit. The fellowship covers boarding, lodging (for the individual only) at the affiliated institution and other subsistence expenses in the form of an adequate allowance in Indian currency. Travel support in the form of a Prepaid Travel Advice (PTA) will be provided for selected candidates. The programme is operational since April 1996.

Eligibility

Applicant must be a scientist, teacher or a research scholar affiliated to a scientific or academic institution in a developing country in Asia (other than, India), Africa, Latin America and Arab region. Applicants below 45 years of age are eligible to apply.

Guidelines for applicants

2. The deadlines for receipt of applications are: 30 JUNE and 31 DECEMBER every year.

3. List of enclosures to accompany application

(a) A detailed Curriculum Vitae which contains date of birth and age, information on the applicant's research interests and experience, publications (only those in refereed journals), present position, professional affiliations, awards and scholarship research etc.

(b) A brief write-up of describing the proposed research work.

4. Forwardals

All applicants must forward their applications only through the Heads of their concerned Departments or any other equivalent person of authority.

5. Preferences

All conditions being satisfied, applicants meeting the following criteria will be given preference over others.

(a) Applicants who have proven academic excellence

(b) Innovation and novelty in the proposed research work

(c) Relevance of training to the parent institution and the home country as endorsed by the recommending authority

6.Correspondence

All applicants, irrespective of their selection will be intimated of the result immediately after the meeting of the selection committee which meets twice a year.

The decisions of the committee are final and binding. No correspondence regarding the selection/rejection of applications will be entertained, once the decisions are taken. Neither is an application processed for reconsideration.

Applicants desirous of updating their records should attach a letter mentioning their name and date of application, along with the information that requires updation.

7. Selected candidates must obtain permission / leave from their parent institutions and Indian visa using the letter from COSTED awarding the fellowship.
