On June 5, 1972, UN Conference on the Human Environment was held in Stockholm, Sweden. 1300 delegates from 113 countries attended the conference, and adopted "Human Environment Declaration" and "action plans" of protecting the global environment. The conference also specified the common principles for human responsibilities and rights for the global environment. All the delegates proposed in unanimous to designate the day of opening the conference as "World Environment Day". In October of the same year, the 27th UN General Assembly passed the proposal.
