By June 10, 2002 eight areas totaling 312,160 hectares in Shandong Province are under highly summer locust prevention. It is the time of high tide for the flying locusts to be harmful to the crops.

In the areas with high locust density, there are 6000 locusts per square meters. In several areas, the number of hoppers per square meter is beyond a thousand.
