Analysis: why is the plague of locust so serious this year?

( Abstract )

An important reason for locusts happening in much larger scale this year is drought. China is suffering the most serious drought in the last 10 years. The water level has dropped in reservoirs, rivers, canals and lakes so that large areas of water bottoms have emerged which provide locusts with favorite hatching conditions.

Secondly, the control measures were not thoroughly implemented, which left large amount of locust remnants.

Thirdly, effect from other countries. In some bordering countries like Kazakstan and Russian, large amount of locusts after eclosion migrated into Xinjiang to spawn, covering an area of almost 420,000 hectares.

At present the locusts are still on the barren lands in most parts of China, and have not arrived in the crop fields yet. The agricultural experts warn people to active control the locusts from flying to avoid the disastrous loss to the agricultural production...
