Chengde suffers severe drought

( Abstract )

Chengde is a summer resort for the citizens of Beijing. But continuous dry and hot weather nearly destroys the place.

The main river of Chengde - Wulie River has already dried up. The highest temperature in Chengde this summer is 43 degrees Celsius.

The resort features three tourist sites: Lakes, Plain, and Mountains. The surface area of the seven lakes totals 40 hectares. Now all the lakes dried up and the bottoms of the lakes all cracked under the scorching sun. There are only a few water lilies left in one lake.

Rehe, another well-known sight in Chengde, is seen without river.

Chengde government planned to have artificial rain to relief the drought. Experts say that the drought there will continue for some time.
