Beijing's environment will reach Olympic standards

( Abstract )

The Director General of the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau introduced that, at present, the Environmental Protection Bureau laid down comprehensive objectives for 2008. Before 2008, the capacity of the natural gas supply will reach 5 billion cubic metres and Beijing would implement the European Number Three Standards for car tail gas emissions. In addition, the coverage of green areas in urban areas would exceed 40%, the average green area per person would be 50 metres, and that the sprinkling of water along the main thoroughfares would reach 100%. The handling rate for the city's sewage will reach above 90% and rubbish would be handled in a way that would not harm the environment. Moreover, in 2007, there will be greenbelts throughout the city and Olympic Park, which will be represented in the ten big ecological projects, will be the first to be completed.
