Air quality continuously improves in Beijing

( Abstract )

Beijing's atmosphere quality continues to be improved. From January to September, the concentration of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, suspending dust and carbon monoxide separately dropped 13%, 6%, 4% and 4% more than the same period last year. The days of grade II and better than grade II in air quality increased from 27.4% in 1998 and 31.5% in 1999 into 46% this year.

As of April this year, 25 items among the fourth-stage task for air pollution control were basically fulfilled in Beijing. By the end of September, 99.2% of the city's industrial enterprises reached the emission standard. 1,350 boilers in the city proper and 71% of the equipment in the outskirt towns changed from burning coal into clean energy. 82% of tail gas of motor vehicles reached the emission standard when it was 61% early this year...

As of November 1st, Beijing will put into practice the 5th stage on the control of air pollution...
